Dan Reiter
Dan Reiter is principal cellist of the Oakland East Bay Symphony. He is also principal cellist with Festival Opera Orchestra, Diablo Ballet, and Fremont Symphony. He was soloist in Bernstein’s Three Meditations and Strauss’ Don Quixote with OEBS.
Dan received critical acclaim for his Pyramids, Canon and Raga for three cellos, harp and mid-eastern drum at Oakland Symphony’s Sound Spectrum series.
Dan formed the Brooklyn Bridge Trio (clarinet, cello, and bass), who performed his original works Concerto a Tre, Tequila Toccata, and Reiter’s Raga. He and Natalie Cox, Principal Harpist of OEBS, founded the Pacific Arts Trio, premiering the compositions Sonata for Flute and Harp and Phantasy Trio. Further works – a blend of western classical and Indian classical music for cello and harp – are Aubade and Windflow. Dan wrote Kaddish for solo cello and received and “Izzy” award for his composition Raga Bach D minor, for cello, percussion, and solo dancer in a collaboration with dancer Robert Moses. He received critical acclaim for his work for solo and cello and orchestra, Kaddish, in a recent performance with Oakland East Bay Symphony.
Dan studied Indian music with Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and recorded two CDs, Garden of Dreams and Legacy, with master Khan. On these projects and with Maihar Indian orchestra, he was performer and arranger. The influence of Indian music can be found in many of Dan’s works, especially those written for cello and harp which were all written for his wife, Natalie Cox.
