"Percussion Poetry in Motion: Terry Longshore's Dynamic Sound"
The percussion world is buzzing with excitement about Terry Longshore, the virtuoso whose genre-defying work seamlessly blends the artistry of the concert stage, the raw energy of a rock club, and the spontaneous flair of jazz. Based in Ashland, Oregon, Longshore is a performer, composer, and educator who serves as Professor of Music and Director of Percussion Studies at the Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University.
Longshore is a master of collaboration, bringing his dynamic voice to every musical encounter. He co-directs flute and percussion duo Caballito Negro and intermedia duo Left Edge Collective, and is a sought-after performer with the Portland Percussion Group, Flamenco Pacifico, and Dúo Flamenco. He's also graced the stages of major festivals and concert series, including the Bang on a Can Long Play Festival and Bang on a Can Marathon in New York, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Green Umbrella Series, the Britt Music & Arts Festival, the Transplanted Roots International Percussion Symposia, and the Percussive Arts Society International Convention.
Longshore's passion for percussion is reflected in his extensive catalogue of over 100 compositions for solo percussion, percussion ensemble, chamber ensemble, symphony orchestra, and theatre. He's recorded multiple CDs, including works by Mark Applebaum, Iannis Xenakis, William Kraft, and Michael Gordon, and is always pushing the boundaries of the genre by commissioning and premiering new works from a diverse group of composers.
Longshore's musical education is as diverse as his performances, with degrees from the California State University at Fresno and Sacramento, as well as a master's and doctoral degree in Contemporary Music Performance from the University of California, San Diego. He's studied Spanish flamenco and classical Indian music, and has been mentored by some of the biggest names in percussion, including Steven Schick, Daniel Kennedy, and Swapan Chaudhuri.
